Happy Sunday, y’all!
I hope each and everyone of you had some time to turn your brains off this long weekend. Albeit, in an ode to classic corporate American culture, I worked Friday but even having a Thursday to regroup was clutch and still made it feel like a long time off.
In past years, I always fully committed to this holiday. I would stack my PTO and ensure I am in nature or by a body of water or sometimes both. I adore being slightly tired out from the sun, skin sunkissed, hair salty, eating the most processed meats like my health doesn’t matter. It’s the August birthday in me, I blame.
This year, I just wanted to sit at home - and that’s what we did. Perhaps it’s because I just moved into an apartment that feels like home for once and I actually wanted to stay in one place. Weirdly, it didn’t feel any less ‘patriotic’ than any previous years and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything. In fact, I was more restful, though I was wistful for that post-swim feeling. I realized, as long as there was the smell of charcoal in the air, grilled meat + watermelon, it felt right.
On the menu this year? A feta farro salad with grilled corn & red pepper, hot dogs, lobster, steaks and unpictured, watermelon, berries & Solid Wiggles jello.
Constructive criticism for our own menu? Take the grilled lobster and turn it into a proper lobster roll, we had extra hot dog buns and with the right fixings, it would have been tres bon.
I hope you all took some time in the ocean, laying out and watching some fireworks for me.
